After Damp Proofing - Damp Free Home

Firstly, let’s discuss what you need to know about making sure the property is damp free when buying or selling a house?

The biggest issue we see faced by homeowners today is dampness within the home. Therefore, one can see that damp is a major cause of financial loss when it comes to property.

Coming in three forms, Rising damp, penetrating damp, and condensation it affects all areas of the home and foundation.

What’s the difference?

Rising damp – Seeping in from the ground it works its way up the building. This type of damp affects walls, skirting boards, and floors.

Detecting Rising Damp:

  • There may be mold, tide-mark, watermarks, or rotting of or around the skirting boards.
  • It’s possible to have peeling wallpaper or peeling paint rising on the wall.
  • Occasionally there will be wet or lifting floorboards or carpeting.

Penetrating Damp – Water leaking through your walls is often linked to penetrating damp. Roof problems such as faulty guttering, broken tiles, and inadequate waterproofing are often the cause. Should this be the case a roofing specialist will be required to ensure that the interior and exterior of the house are intact.

How to detect Penetrating Damp:

  • A musty damp smell is commonly one of the first signs.
  • Mold can appear on ceilings and walls.
  • Areas around the house feel cold or damp to the touch

Condensation – Another form of damp which is easy to spot is condensation. This type of damp is regularly found in bathrooms and is usually caused by the occupants of the house.
